Night by Edward Robert Hughes
While stalking this pre-raphaelite painter obsessed with symbolism - this time around - I came across the painting above. Why add it to the blog? I didn’t know it was him - but this is the painting used on the cover of a book: The Alphabet VS The Goddess by Leonard Shlain. Subtitled - the Conflict Between Word and Image. I highly recommend the book. He suggests that the patriarchy won when they made The Word more important than The Image… and that because of new technology - from photography to computer screen icons and movies - we are experiencing a resurgence of feminist, matriarchal ideals as our brains become re-accustomed to interpreting Image (right brain) - not just Words (left brain). I don’t know if his theory is accurate - but I can’t recommend this book enough.
